McKinney Capital's predecessor originated with Roddy and Janice McKinney’s investment in the satellite television business in 1994. With the effort of Roddy’s entire family and a dedicated staff, the company became Satellites Unlimited, now a leading regional service provider and authorized retailer for DISH consisting of 19 offices with more than 600 team members serving over 400,000 customers annually. The McKinneys and their team also founded two other businesses that arose from needs recognized in the satellite installation industry: Digital Electronic Supply (DES) was created in order to manufacture coaxial cable used in satellite installation. Pixsys Technologies was created due to the need for cloud-based software to aid the operations of independent DISH retail and installation companies.
In 2011, the McKinneys formed McKinney Capital to diversify their family holdings and use their knowledge of field services management and technology in other sectors. Soon afterwards, the McKinneys acquired commercial grounds management firm Landscape Workshop, which has grown from under $15 million in revenue to over $45 million in revenue by delivering it’s value proposition of dedicated professionals, quality service, and proactive management.
In 2016 the McKinneys established McKinney Communications Corporation, which includes Satellites Unlimited, Pixsys Technologies, and DES. McKinney Communications Corporation is an ESOP-owned company, but the four adult McKinney family members still serve on the Board of MCC, with Danny McKinney serving as CEO and providing day-to-day leadership of MCC.
Using resources from the creation of the ESOP, McKinney Capital has broadened its investment mandate and made a number of non-control investments, along with nurturing the growth of Landscape Workshop. These non-control investments include the 2019 investment in Urgent Care for Children, which meets an unmet need for after hours health care for children.
In 2018, McKinney Capital started Savvy Otter, a custom software development and staff augmentation firm, to leverage the expertise of the Pixsys team and to meet an unmet need for US-based software development and integration that is delivered on time, on budget, and with high quality.
Throughout this history, the McKinneys, their businesses, and their executives have been active supporters of the community, supporting and serving on boards of worthy organizations such as the Tum Tum Foundation, Smile-A-Mile, the Birmingham Zoo, the Public Affairs Research Council of Alabama, and many others.
